The Sinner 4 - big families, bigger lies

One more season of The Sinner , and it is absolutely creepy, as usual. Detective Ambrose can’t seem to retire in peace. He is trying to get away from his old life by spending some days on a small island. Yet, as soon as he gets there, he sees a girl jumping out of a cliff to her death. He can’t ignore it. Could you? No surprises: there is a big and messed up story behind that jump.  Everybody knows everybody’s… masks The case happens on a small island where everybody knows everybody. But if you think that can help Detective Ambrose find out what happened, you’re wrong. They all just seem to be in his way. Either because they are all friends and try to protect each other or try to take justice into their own hands, they all harm the case. This includes the victim’s grandmother - the best character in the season. Every time it seems you can trust her, you have a setback.  As usual, no one is who they claim to be, who they seem to be. They all have something to hide, secrets and complic

Through My Window (A través de mi Ventana) - Review: all the cliches in one single movie

Through my window (in the original: A través de mi Ventana ) is a Spanish teen movie about a romantic love story between two neighbors. And it is full of cliches . All Cliches in One Movie This is a movie where everything seems to be coming out of the most typical cliche. You have love between two people from very different social environments; a best friend madly in love, but definitely in the friend zone, no chance; a bad guy that is bad because no one loves or understands him; the good girl that turns him into a good guy. You name it! I’m sure that every cliche you can think of is there somewhere. And obviously, love always wins in the end. Sometimes the cliches work. That’s why they become cliches because they work and they are used repeatedly. Well, not this time. Then, hoping to make it more interesting, they decided to throw some (random) sex scenes in the middle. Sorry, it didn’t work either.  Boring Maybe I’m too old, but I have no patience for this kind of story anymore. T

The Tinder Swindler - Review: using your love

How do you become a victim? The new Netflix documentary, The Tinder Swindler , is about a man who says his name is Simon Leviev. He pretends to be a millionaire in Tinder's dating app.  He gains the trust of the women and then starts asking for money. He dates many women, and one pays the expenses of the other. Strange? Maybe, but it worked for a long time. Too long. Why did you believe that man? As soon as the story became public, many people blamed the victims. How could they be so naive? How could they not get suspicious? When watching the documentary is pretty evident that something is wrong, but that is our perception now. We are already looking for leads that he is not who he says he is. It's easier that way. These women were involved, and psychology worked against them. He poses as a rich man. Money is a key to safety these days. So, he makes them feel safe. He is kind, generous, and in danger. He shows himself vulnerable. Many people don't realize how being vulne

Last Night in Soho - Review

Last Night in Soho is the most recent movie by Edgar Wright. So that alone is a reason to check it out, right?  This is probably one of the weirdest movies I’ve seen in months. Yet, as soon as I started watching, I couldn’t look away anymore. It is different, which makes it interesting, but there is no better word to describe it than weird . The 60s While living in the present time, the main character, Eloise, is a young lady in love with the 60s. She loves music, fashion, and everything related to that decade. Eloise is not an ordinary girl, though. She seems to have some "spiritual powers", I would say. We know she sees her dead mother, but we are never sure what she can do more. Things get weird when, after renting a room from an old lady, she is transported to the 60s London. There, she follows a mysterious woman named Sandie. She is so in love with the decade that everything seems fascinating. At first… It quickly turns out to be a bit creepy, and it will probably mak

After Life - the fragility of being human

After Life is a British show about a journalist mourning his wife. She passed away with breast cancer, and he hasn't found a way to process his loss. A Portrait of True Depression Depression is not sitting at the corner and crying. Yes, you may have those moments, but they aren't the majority. Especially when you are around other people. After Life was able to show that thoughtfully and truthfully. Depression is anger. You feel as you hate everything and everyone. Depression is tiredness, is lack of enthusiasm. Everything is dull, and you don't have the will to move. You don't even try. Depression is a void. This was so perfectly showed that even being a comedy (yes, you will have funny moments), it brings tears to your eyes sometimes. Making serious topics lighter The topic is hard, and it could be treated in a very dark way, but the choice for comedy was perfect in many ways. The news for the newspaper are, most of the time, ridiculous. You'll laugh at some ca
