American Primeval - harsh times

Netflix 's American Primeval is profoundly moving. It immerses viewers in the brutality and beauty of the American frontierving.  The show vividly portrays how harrowing and unforgiving life was during the period when survival was a daily battle against nature, violence, and injustice. Bravery To survive, you couldn't be ordinary. You must be brave, strong, and resourceful. And that's Abish. Her courage and determination were incredibly inspiring, and I found myself rooting for her every step of the way. She's a testament to the strength it took to endure such a harsh world, and her journey is one of the most memorable aspects of the series. Justice is a strange word The series doesn't shy away from showing the injustice of the era, and while that made it hard to watch at times, it also added a layer of emotional depth that kept me hooked.  Isaac's death hit me especially hard. After all he endured, to see him go like that was heartbreaking. Sara remains a my...

Devil in Ohio - a Review

Based on the book of Daria Polatin, with the same title, Devil in Ohio , is the story of a traumatized girl that escapes from a cult and finds shelter with a psychiatrist and her family. Cults are part of the social curiosity, which is enough reason for many to check out this show. Yet, this wasn’t what had the most significant impact on me. The therapist Dr. Suzanne Mathis is a therapist that runs the extra mile for her clients. After meeting Mae, she immediately feels like a mission to take care of and help her. But, being a traumatized child herself, she quickly forgets the needed boundaries between patient and doctor. And sometimes, she forgets about her own family and their needs. I found her an annoying woman. She always has the right thing to say but as a psychiatrist. Even for her daughters, she says the right sentences, but not as a mother would. Instead, she seems cold and distant and so focused on Mae’s needs that no one else’s seems to matter. She is so eager to do th...

Inventing Anna - Review

If you like stories of fraud and deception, this is your show. But do not get too excited. The idea was good, but if you expect to understand the real story of Anna Delvey, you might be disappointed.  The show is interesting enough. However, there are some (very) boring moments - especially in the first couple of episodes. The journalist Vivian is one of the characters with a more significant impact. She is an obsessed journalist looking for answers about Anna Delvey. She runs the extra mile to try to understand the reason, the true reason for someone becoming like her. Even after many dead ends, it is difficult for her to give up on the story. No one becomes Anna Delvey for no reason. Or do they? I find Vivian a bit annoying, to be honest - she is a grown woman acting like a toddler with a tantrum. I could not empathize with this character, which is a problem because, in some parts, she is the protagonist, not Anna.  From my point of view, a terrible mistake for the sh...

The White Queen - women's perspective on a men’s world

The White Queen is a historical British show about the war between the Lancaster and the York families for the throne of England. The story is told from the women's point of view. It is an interesting show, and I would advise you not to give up on the first episode. It isn’t very exciting, but it aims to put us into the story, introduce the characters, and understand the political atmosphere of the time. The show gets better with each episode. Witchcraft The white queen is a bit dark, isn’t she? She and her mother know some spells and magic arts which they use with few concerns on various occasions. Unfortunately, the fact seems to be known by most characters, creating even more distrust. The result is some paranoia on both sides and the consequent problems that come with it.  Ruling time Being a king was a strange occupation in these times. And I wonder: did they have time to rule?  In this show, all you see the king involved in is war. He goes to war. He comes back f...

Maid - There are many types of violence

How do you start over when everything is against you? Alex has an alcoholic husband who tends to become violent and has no help from anyone. Not even her mom and dad. So, she sees herself completely alone. Yet, she is a brave woman. She takes the most challenging decision for any domestic abuse victim: she leaves. She picks her daughter and leaves home. Yet, now, she has no job, no house, and no money. She left with only 18 dollars in her pocket.  You may cry The bravest of decisions has the most difficult of consequences. It always does, right? That’s why she is so brave. But, as a viewer, it breaks your heart to watch some of the scenes. At the beginning of the story, Alex doesn’t understand that she is a victim. He never actually hit her. With time and the right help, she comprehends what happened to her, but it doesn’t matter. Not for court, not even for her family. She has no bruises after all. How do you prove psychological abuse? Her partner says he loves her. He seem...

Clickbait - surprising and intense: a review

Clickbait is an intense thriller intending to show us that we never really know those near us. The most unexpected person can be the greatest danger. It has a well-built mystery story. Each episode focuses on the perspective of a different character. It enriches the story and gives it great emotional material. The family Nick disappears, and an online video announces he will die as soon as the video reaches 5 million views. This is how everything starts, but it is only the beginning of a complicated and intricate story. From my point of view, Nick’s family is the main character of the show. A devastated family, full of tragedy and doubts. Was Nick who they thought he was? Nick’s sister, Pia, is the one that believes him throughout all the show, yet, for some reason, she gets on my nerves.  Secrets and surprises As police and family investigate Nick’s disappearance, secrets seem to pop up from everywhere. The show doesn’t stop surprising us. Even when you think you already f...

Bodyguard - Review

This is not, usually, “my kind of show”. I started watching when I saw the protagonist was Richard Madden. Then, after - I’d say - 20 minutes, it was impossible to stop. Mystery and suspense The show became very popular in the United Kingdom, and that’s not surprising. It is very good. The story is very well conducted, with the right amount of mystery. You have a fantastic conspiracy, despite the cliches emerging in the second half of the season, and it’s breathtaking sometimes. The protagonist, David Budd, is also a fascinating character. It has depth, and a rich background - you always find out something new about him. His professionalism and personal values, and the way he deals with the conflict between those two things put us to think. How far would you go to fulfill your responsibilities, regardless of how you feel about them? Relate and connect Many people might look at the show from a “political perspective”. We can’t deny the political part of it, obviously, but me… I f...

Unbelievable: a revolting story - review

When I finish watching a show, I always try to think of the first couple of words that come to my mind about it. Those are usually a perfect sample of what the show meant to me. In this case, this was extremely easy: revolting.  The show is about a girl, Marie, with a foster care system past, who claims to have been raped. It all begins with her describing to the police, and later to hospital staff, what happened to her. I’m not sure of how many times, but I would say around 5. Five times remembering all the details of her traumatizing experience. The cold environment, the repetition, the constant amount of tests without a kind word to Marie, it's so cruel. While you see Marie being interrogated, examined, and photographed, you understand why most victims do not report. What came to my mind was: the criminal has rights, but how about the victim’s rights? Is it true? The investigation starts and the discomfort feeling grows. The police officers - all older m...
