Titan: The OceanGate Disaster – A Shallow Dive into Negligence

Netflix’s Titan: The OceanGate Disaster sets out to explore one of the most gripping and tragic technological failures in recent years, but instead delivers a surface-level narrative that feels more like a recap than a revelation.  With all the ingredients for a compelling, thought-provoking documentary — innovation, risk, tragedy, and human ambition — the final product fails to go deeper than the headlines we’ve already seen. A Story of Ambition — and Arrogance The central character of this documentary is Stockton Rush , the CEO of OceanGate , whose dream of pioneering deep-sea tourism ended in catastrophic failure. The film frames him as a man blinded by ambition, arrogance, and an unsettling disregard for safety standards.  While this character study could have provided a nuanced examination of human fallibility and exploration ethics, Titan instead relies on obvious conclusions and predictable tropes. There is little effort to explore the broader implications o...

Review: Billie Eilish: Unfiltered – A Shallow, Soulless Recap Pretending to Be a Documentary

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆ (1/5) If you're expecting Billie Eilish: Unfiltered to offer an intimate look into the life, artistry, or creative process of one of Gen Z’s most influential pop icons, prepare to be disappointed.  This so-called documentary barely scratches the surface, delivering little more than a dry, lifeless rundown of Billie Eilish 's discography, awards, and chart performances. At best, it's a glorified Wikipedia entry with background music. At worst, it’s a wasted hour of potential. Unfiltered? The documentary lacks narrative depth, personal insight, or any meaningful exploration of who Billie Eilish is beyond her resume. Rather than providing behind-the-scenes footage, raw interviews, or critical commentary, Unfiltered relies on a monotonous narrator reeling off her achievements like items on a grocery list. There are occasional quotes from Billie herself, but they’re so brief and context-free they feel like filler material. For a documentary claiming to be “u...

I Am: Celine Dion – A Heartbreaking Glimpse Behind the Curtain

I Am: Celine Dion , the new Prime Video documentary, invites viewers behind the spotlight to meet the woman behind one of the most powerful voices in music.  It’s a story about talent, resilience, and suffering, all wrapped in a painfully honest narrative. Seeing the Woman, Not Just the Icon What I appreciated most about this documentary - and others like it - is how it strips away the glamour and gives us Celine as a human being—vulnerable, soft-spoken, and struggling.  For decades, we’ve seen her on massive stages, larger than life. But here, we meet the mother, the patient, the grieving widow, the woman fighting to live a life that once seemed destined for fairy tales. It’s powerful to witness that shift. An Intimate, Sometimes Painful Portrait The documentary doesn’t shy away from Celine’s battle with Stiff Person Syndrome , a rare and devastating neurological disorder. It’s heartbreaking to watch, especially knowing she still has so much love to give—to her au...

Can Monsters Love?Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story

Netflix's Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story is not just a true crime documentary — it’s a psychological deep dive into one of the most disturbing couples in British criminal history .  While the crimes are shocking, the nature of Fred and Rose’s relationship truly unsettles. Were they in love? Or was their bond something far darker? A Match Made in Hell From the moment Fred and Rose met, something clicked. But it wasn’t a love story — it was a dangerous connection built on control, abuse, and mutual cruelty.  The documentary shows us how they fed off each other’s darkest urges. It wasn’t about love in the traditional sense. It was about power, domination, and shared depravity. Can Psychopaths Feel Love? This is the big question. Can two people with such extreme psychological disorders really feel love? Some experts believe psychopaths can feel attachment, but not empathy — they might need someone, but not care for them in the way most of us understand....

Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing - a disturbing behind the scenes overview

The Netflix documentary Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing dives into a disturbing new reality: children becoming full-time social media stars, often at the cost of their health, safety, and childhood. While it centers around YouTube star Piper Rockelle and her mother/manager, Tiffany, it’s about far more than just one family. It’s a cautionary tale about the thousands of kids who dream of online fame—and the adults cashing in on it. What begins as fun, light-hearted family content quickly spirals into something darker. Piper becomes the main source of income for her entire family, a burden no child should bear. As any adult knows, financial pressure is heavy—and it’s emotionally crushing for a teenager. Support or Exploitation?  The documentary shows how quickly the lines blur between parenting and profiting. What shocked me the most was how many parents—especially those who joined a lawsuit against Tiffany—seemed more upset about lost revenue than emotional harm. Seve...

Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife - How far can your trust go?

I just finished the Netflix documentary Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife , and I must say: it's shocking! In theory, we know everyone can be bad, even our doctors, but watching it is quite different. The documentary is about the world-renowned surgeon Paolo Macchiarini. He claimed to cure patients by inserting a plastic trachea into them. This plastic tube would be bathed in stem cells and, in theory, become a living organ. The reality was quite different, and what's most scary is how the medical community itself couldn't spot him before. He literally was able to do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted, with no one to stop him. Bad Surgeon, Bad Person His total disregard for human life, particularly the life of his patients, gives you the chills, but he wasn't a better person, personally speaking. He had a family in Barcelona; he seduced a reporter to get good publicity and a dead patient's mother to avoid (or try to avoid) further complications in court. They...

Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut - Review

This Netflix documentary explores the fascinating world of gut health and its impact on our well-being. Renowned gut specialist Dr. Giulia Enders MD, collaborates with neuropsychology, epidemiology, neuroscience, and microbial ecology experts. Dr. Enders guides us into the intricate relationship between dietary choices, gut health, and brain function.  The Gut’s Role The film explains how our gut works and emphasizes the importance of a diverse diet. Using cute and colorful animations, it clarifies how the microbiome develops after birth.  Dr. Enders reminds us that our gut is flexible and changes based on our eating. A diversified diet is vital to nourish the microbial community within our gut.  Missing Expertise  Unfortunately, the documentary lacks input from registered dietitian nutritionists. While culinary expertise is valuable, specialized food and dietary science professionals are essential.  A registered dietitian could have provided personalize...

Secrets of the Neanderthals - a review

Secrets of the Neanderthals is a Netflix documentary about our ancestors. It challenges your preconceptions about this ancient human species and introduces you to a different world. Kindness and caring The documentary is fascinating and introduces a new perspective about the Neanderthals. To this day, the word Neanderthal is used as offensive; it means that someone is not intelligent. Well, this documentary makes that assumption go away. Various evidence left behind by these humans shows that they weren’t simply brutes with no complex cognitive activity. In fact, they seemed to be caring to each other. They took care of their elders and sick or hurt members of the group. This is probably one of the most significant evidence of an organized civilization.  They even take care of their dead. The evidence shows that they have rituals to bury their loved ones who have died, which shows their ability to think about themselves and their place in the world. It raises questions Du...

Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare - Review

Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare takes you on an unsettling journey into the heart of, possibly, the worst summer camp you could imagine. Beneath the sun-dappled trees lies a sinister secret. The remote retreat promising personal growth, friendship, and adventure soon turns into a twisted world. There, the counselors wield psychological manipulation as deftly as they do canoes. The campers' laughter echoes against a backdrop of hidden horrors, and the tension builds relentlessly. What it is and what it should be Worried parents send their difficult teens to the camp, hoping the experience will help make them better people. Naturally, they could never know what was happening there. Yet, shouldn't the kidnapping to take the kids there be a red flag? The counselor and mentors are nothing but correctional officers with zero regard for the kids' well-being and safety. Some stuff is nearly unbelievable. As a viewer, you're witnessing an unfolding nightmare of all sorts of abuse. ...

You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment - Review

You Are What You Eat is a Netflix documentary about a study with twins to evaluate the impact of food on our bodies. I love these studies with twins. I find it fascinating. Two genetically identical people are the best way to understand how things affect our bodies. Vegan vs Omnivorous In this study, one of the twins would eat vegan food for eight weeks, while the other one would eat an omnivorous diet, yet the most healthy possible, and see how that impacts their bodies. They had different measurements like weight, blood pressure, and biological age of the cells… and they wanted to see what would happen in this short period of time. I'm not a defender of a vegan diet, nor do I think meat is bad for your health, yet, due to the conditions in which our food is created, I was expecting a better impact in the vegan diet twin from the beginning. It’s about everything The show is about the study itself, but it is also about showing what is wrong with our food. You see animal farms, ...

World War II: From the Frontlines - A Deep Journey Through History

Netflix recently offered us a new historical documentary - World War II: From the Frontlines . It is a good addition to the streaming platform. It narrates the most significant moments of World War II with a delicate balance between facts and emotional depth. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the monumental tragedy. A Powerful Narrative with Emotional Depth A war is more than numbers and facts; World War II: From the Frontlines proves it. It captures both the gravity of the events and the human stories that unfolded during this tumultuous period. It conveys the emotional impact of the war without sacrificing the accuracy of historical details. This makes World War II: From the Frontlines a compelling watch, even for those who aren't history enthusiasts. Bringing History to Life The restoration and colorization of original footage is what sets this documentary apart from others on the matter. The decision to breathe life into these historical recordings adds immersion...

Depp V Amber - the unbelievable before your eyes

The Depp V Amber trial was one of the latest (and biggest) worldwide scandals, and Netflix couldn't risk missing out. Hollywood star Johnny Depp took his ex-wife, Amber Heard, to court for defamation after she claimed to have been a victim of domestic violence. I didn't follow the trial then, but I couldn't avoid hearing a couple of things. Everything I heard then sounded ridiculous, and I decided not to watch those videos.  Everything sounded slightly absurd, and as Johnny Depp's fan, I didn't want to believe he would do such things, but at the same time… who knows? The Documentary When I first saw that there was a documentary about all of it on Netflix , I didn't give it much importance. Everything was finished, and why explore that even more? So, I ignored it for a while. Eventually, I got curious, so I hit the watch now button. “Really?” This was my most asked question while watching the whole thing. There was so much absurd stuff, all exposed like a gi...

Queen Cleopatra - quick review

Cleopatra is this figure who is a part of our collective imagination. Surrounded by all sorts of stories, myths, and legends spread through the years, no one can tell the truth from the lies anymore. So, since it is the historical figure everyone knows about, I had to watch Queen Cleopatra , the Netflix re-enactment documentary. Now, the great question is: is it good? No. Is it terrible? Trust me; it could be worse.  So, what’s the big issue, and why does everyone hate it? Who was Cleopatra? The truth is we all know her name. Unfortunately, mainly because of her romance with Mark Anthony rather than because of all she did as the ruler of Egypt. Yet, we know nothing about her. One of the things that is more controversial is her physical appearance. Queen Cleopatra choose to represent her as a black woman. And that became a big issue, even leading to a lawsuit against Netflix! Aren’t you taking it a bit too seriously? I don’t know why they did that. If it is because they hav...

Lucy Worsley Investigates - a great History lesson

Lucy Worsley Investigates is an investigative documentary that will make you look at History classes differently. Forget the endless boring lessons. Here, the focus is on the mystery and actual investigation work. In this first season (I hope there will be more), Lucy Worsley investigates 4 dramatic chapters of British History. If you don't know much about it, don't worry, it is well-explained and put into context. It is like picking up a random of facts and happenings and giving them real meaning. Plague, witches, mental health, and murderer  In these 4 episodes, Lucy Worsley investigates the Black Death, the witch trials, how mental health evolved in the last couple of centuries, and the murder of the Princes in the tower. It is all well documented and narrated as a great entertaining story. Fascinating! You do not always have complete answers to the questions, though. For example, in the princes' episode, we never have a definite explanation for what happened or if th...

Pamela, a love story - review

Pamela, a love story is a Netflix documentary where Pamela Anderson takes back the narrative of her life.  After being so exploited and even humiliated throughout the 90s, the time came when she was able to tell her story. She gives access to her thoughts and feelings through her own words, memories, videos, and journal entries.  Who is this woman? The media sold her as a plastic doll, a Barbie, ridiculous and dumb. So, you may find it intriguing to know who this woman is. You can argue that she is faking for the camera. In my opinion, she wasn't. She comes across as an adorable, gentle, and giggling person. A sweet mom and a passionate woman. She seems a little nervous, maybe a bit uncomfortable at some points, but she is a well-resolved middle-aged woman. She went through a lot in her life. From a young age, many things happened to her that no one should ever have to deal with, but she persevered without bitterness or victimization. “Why do these grown men hate me s...

Earthstorm - Mother nature is a scary thing.

Earthstorm is a 4 episodes Netflix documentary about the wrath of Mother Nature. Each episode focuses on one of the most incredible and terrifying natural disasters one can find.  What you see is quite impressive. The footage is breathtaking, and you have different perspectives - scientific and humanitarian.  How it happened vs. How it felt One thing is what happens from a practical and technical point of view. Another, totally different, is the perspective of the people who see their lives destroyed on many levels.  The footage of the devastation and testimonials give a chill in your spine.  Especially the ones got by the storm chasers.  Solidarity wins Yet, despite the tragedies, this documentary also shows us that there is still good within the human race. Sometimes we forget about that.  It's heartwarming to see people united to help each other. Sometimes, coming from far away to help others attacked by such a tremendous force.   This ...

Vatican Girl - An unbelievable story

Vatican Girl is a Netflix documentary about Emanuela Orlandi, a 15 years old girl resident in Vatican City that disappeared in the summer of 1983. The documentary tells us multiple theories about the reasons for her disappearance and what might have happened to her.  The family The uncertainty hurts too much. Emanuela’s family never gave up looking for her. All these years, they suffered, and they clung to every little piece of hope. In the documentary, her siblings and some friends talk about her. Who she was, and what she was like. They also talk about that last fateful day and their pain. At this point, most of them only want some closure. The hope is always there, but I don’t think that, after so many years, any of them believes that Emanuela is still alive. The Vatican is made of people This documentary is about Emanuela and her family and the pain the case caused them. Yet, if you watch it closely, the documentary criticizes the Vatican and its (to say the least) shad...

Sins of Our Mother - How far can a delusion take you?

Sins of Our Mother is a true crime documentary, and you should prepare yourself to be shocked.  Crimes involving children are always shocking. But, when the crime comes from their own mother… it's unbearable. How can a mother do something like that? Why? How crazy must she be? Religion Fanaticism and a belief in the Apocalypse seem to be the reason why Lori Vallow allegedly murdered her two children and conspired to murder her ex-husband. Doom day, zombies, dark spirits… a macabre tale of a mother no one deserves to have. Blind faith (no matter the religion) kills and destroys. This case is one more example of how that assessment is true.  Testimonials This kind of documentary always involves testimonials from friends, family, and other people close to the happenings. In this case, some of them are pretty shocking. I truly felt for Lori's mother. She wanted so desperately to believe her daughter wasn't a monster. I can't even imagine how that woman was feeling. Also, ...

Indian Matchmaking - playing with love

Indian Matchmaking appeared as a suggestion on my Netflix account. I initially ignored it, but eventually, I decided to check it out. It is a weird show, I felt like they were going on sales to find a spouse, but I had some fun. I watched the two seasons, and I must say that the first clients were more fun. But, unfortunately, the second season was boring.  Indian culture For someone like me, who knows very little of the Indian culture, this show gives us some perspective on what it is like. And you end up hoping for them to find a good match. However, especially in the second season, things get a bit… wild—horoscopes, curses… way out of line for someone like me. Besides, I'm afraid I have to disagree with Sima on many things… The bachelors are not so good, only because they have money or dated a lot (what?). That last one says something very different, aunty ! Since it is a show, and we all know that people act in reality shows, I have one question: is it realistic? I'm n...

Inside the Mind of a Cat - Review

Inside the Mind of a Cat is a lovely Netflix documentary, full of good mood and a funny approach to our furry companions. New research? The documentary claims to have new breakthrough data from the most recent research about cats. I honestly didn’t see anything that I considered new or completely groundbreaking. Anyone who deals closely with cats daily knows this stuff. It is a matter of observing your pet. It is evident that they love us, they know their name (unless they have some cognitive issue, which happens), and they can learn things if we take the time and effort to teach them. Training a cat As I said, you can teach things to your cat, but the kind of training they refer to here… that’s a whole other level.  I don’t think my cat cares enough to let me train him to do those tricks, and I definitely don’t have the patience. Purr, purr Frankly, the most surprising new information I got from the documentary was that the frequency of a cat’s purring was similar to that ...
