The third season of Emily in Paris got a lot of hate and love among the viewers. People can’t decide if it was the best season or the worst of all. And I understand why.
We start the season with Emily’s life in perfect chaos, and she doesn’t seem to know what she wants. She never does… Is this good for the plot? Maybe. Is this annoying? Sometimes. So… why can’t we stop watching it?
Are you feeling frustrated? Me too.
She doesn’t know what she wants. She can’t make a decision, not in her love life, not in her job… And it is not because she wants it all. She is not mature enough to say no and own her decision and its consequences. Emily comes across as a spoiled little girl.
The problem is that she is the main character, yet, Mindy starts to feel way more interesting than her. Also, any other character on the show is funnier than Emily, namely her co-workers, who apparently are very bad at their jobs and need her to save them with every single client… How did they keep the company running before her? It doesn’t sound very realistic, does it?
Why isn’t she worried?
Speaking of realism, Emily is in a foreign country, in which language she can barely say two sentences, jobless and not worrying at all! She doesn’t need to go home. She doesn’t seem to care.
She doesn’t lose her apartment - given by the company who fired her - and in which she put her friend, without permission, if I’m not mistaken.
All these illogical things give the show some fairy tale aura that I believe is the reason for its success. Ultimately, Emily will live happily ever after, or so they make us feel.
Everything goes back into its place.
This season ends giving us the idea that everything is where it should be. Emily is back to work in a job she is the absolute best, and Camille is out of her way so she can date Gabriel. It’s like we are back to the first season, with some improvements or not.
How about Alfie? The poor guy was caught in her inability to make decisions. The sad part is that he is a more interesting character than Gabriel.
For some reason, it still works
Emily is Paris is a light, funny show that, from day 1, is surrounded by polemics. This season wasn’t any different from the previous ones, which is probably why it still works.
It has a couple of good characters and makes you smile. It isn’t a show of fantastic quality, but it catches the viewer.
