The way I see it, Bridgerton is a story about a market of young girls available for men. Their future depends on how well they can attract a male.
The main characters are the Bridgerton family. Daphne reached the age to marry. Her wedding will influence the whole family, including her sisters’ future. Yet, Daphne’s father died, and she depends on her older brother - an arrogant idiot. Well, in his defense, most of the characters are annoying. Appearances are everything and don’t even make me talk about the Duke’s father.
So, what did I hate the most about this show?
1. Predictability
The whole thing was predictable. That arrangement between Daphne and Duke? Wasn’t it obvious how it would end?
The Duke is a slightly arrogant fool, with daddy issues, but quite fun nonetheless. Daphne was desperate for attention. So, their falling in love was painfully obvious from the first minute.
The happy ending! Yes, they had a baby, and they will now be happily ever after. Couldn’t you see that coming?
2. Lady Whistledown
Lady Whistledown has two major roles in the show - to be a mystery and to be funny. She fails in both.
Yes, she has a slightly funny way to talk, but sometimes she can also be very annoying! And about the mystery… Didn’t you think about Penelope? From some point, it felt quite evident that she could be Lady Whistledown.
3. I laugh!
At first sight, this would be a good thing, right? I enjoy the fact that it made me laugh. The problem is that I don’t think this show was supposed to be a comedy. So, I’m not sure that’s an actual good thing.
Some scenes were simply too ridiculous to keep a serious face.
Yet, not everything is terrible in Bridgerton. There was a couple of things I enjoyed.
1. Feminists
Penelope and Eloise are a bit ahead of their time with their feminist ideals, which was fantastic. Especially Eloise brings a freshness to the show and the theatrical romance in the story.
Daphne isn’t exactly a feminist, but she has a place here too. She is quite assertive, and she knows what she wants and fights for it.
2. Race isn’t important
The way the show was made was beautiful on this subject. There are people from different races amongst the nobility. Obviously, this wasn’t real life, but the show is not about how it was, but how it could have been. I truly liked that part.
