I was expecting this season for quite a long time. This was an exciting decade, and it had a great contribution to the show's entertainment dimension. The Iron Lady’s government, the problems with IRA, Diana getting into the royal family…
It starts with a great tragedy. Once more, you can feel disturbed by the restraint with which the royal family lives their grief.
Prince Charles
Charles was a rebel! His character earns new importance in this season, and it doesn’t look good for the Prince of Wales.
He looks vicious, rude… His envy and resentment from his wife’s popularity are sickening. Like the Queen says in the last episode, he is a spoiled privileged boy. Besides, since they first met, it was obvious that Diana wasn’t a woman to be in the shadows.
Charles keeps ignoring and betraying her, time after time. Yet, when she does the same, she is the one breaking the vows. Every other character seems to think this is normal! Yes, those were different times, but this happened not so long ago. Keep that in mind.
Yet, Charles isn’t the only one that doesn’t look good in the picture. All the princes are arrogant fools in this show.
Diana
Diana was probably the most expected character since the show began. It is sad to see how unhappy she was, but her marriage was doomed from the beginning. Stubbornness and protocols ruining lives. Not only for Charles and Diana, but Anne looks pretty unhappy as well.
Diana was represented as a sweet girl and lovely mother. We got to see how the people loved her, her work with the charity, and her good heart. Yet, they didn’t avoid to show the other side of her. Diana looks like an immature girl playing princes and princesses with very few responsibilities for most of the show.
The Duke of Edinburgh had a soft spot for Diana, didn’t he? I loved his speech to her in the end.
The Iron Lady
Margaret Thatcher is one of those characters who belong in history books. It was good to watch this show and see that person who was simply a name for me, gaining life. Gillian Anderson is an amazing actress!
Thatcher’s husband is a funny character, and I would like to see him more. That weekend with the royal family had a few funny scenes, but I pitied her. It is difficult not to belong.
She had a difficult life as Prime Minister and an unbreakable will to make things right. During the show, I felt they avoided any political details. They focused on her as a person, with feelings, problems, and personal life. The recognition of her contribution by the Queen was a beautiful scene.
Emotional distance
From the beginning, the Queen was a distant person of few affections. Obviously, this would have repercussions in her relationship with her children. It was curious to see how surprised she was when she figured out that she doesn’t know her kids at all.
Yet, she is the Queen, so she is not open to criticism. It seems that she can’t bear them because she feels it is true. She wasn’t a good mother, and it hurts to look at your flaws.
Comparatively, her sister seems arrogant and disrespectful, but she is deeply emotional. All she needs is love and care.
Everything to keep appearances
Keep the appearances is vital for the royal family, even when that implies the unhappiness of many of them. Broken marriages have to be carried on, no matter what. The appearances always come first.
Yet, hiding and declaring dead family members who don’t fit? That shocked me! It was so cruel! Besides, talking about pure bloodline? Is that a justification for what? The Royal family lives in the middle ages!
Politics
Concerning politics, I find the Queen’s role very difficult. Her disagreement with the Iron Lady made me think about what she may think of the present Prime Minister. How does she deal with him?
Balance politics and royal duties with family life is tough. The show focuses on that since the beginning. The sense of duty is always in the way.
What is the truth?
Polemics and accusations surrounded this season. The Royal family didn’t like it, and I can’t blame them. Most of them did not look good. Yet, what is true and what is not? Only they can truly know that.
I thought it was an interesting piece of entertainment. That’s how I look at the show.
Waiting for season 5!
