If you knew that an asteroid was about to collide with Earth and annihilate us all… what would you do?
This is the beginning premise of Salvation. It all starts when a brilliant MIT student finds out that the world is about to end. With this discovery, Liam enters a hallucinating race against time.
Yet, to have such knowledge is more complicated than it looks. It is not just about how could he save the planet, but also how could he keep going? How to lie to his loved ones? Do they deserve to know? Is it his right to keep them in ignorance? Is it even his choice? How to pretend everything is okay? How to live your everyday life?
The greater good
Liam quickly discovers the ugly face of acting in the “greater good” name - deception and treason.
Would you sacrifice half of the world population to save the other half? Would you choose to save everyone or no one at all?
Some decisions are impossible to make. That's explored in this show - the characters' psychological issues, doubts, and anguishes.
Humans being humans
While the world is about to come to an end, politics and dirtiness never stop. How far can a government go? How far can you go for… power? Would you ignore the Apocalypse? Would you create an international war? A civil war?
The asteroid is coming down, but Mankind is too busy: political coups, treason, money, power. Should we stop and talk about priorities? Is power more important than life?
This is a discussion that would never end, and the show brings it up to light once more. I believe that the fact that we know that those inverted priorities are a reality is what gives Salvation such an impact.
Romance to soften things
Adding romance to this story was unnecessary, and frankly, the worst part of it. It could take some of the pressure from the characters or give us a couple of more peaceful minutes, but I didn’t like it. We just want them to move on and to see what's coming next. Every romantic scene kept me thinking, “Do you think this is the best time for it?!”
Besides, what’s the matter with Grace that makes all men fall in love? She is not even that interesting…
Wait, we want more!
We have a well-crafted plot with some unforeseen moments and plot twists. A story made of decisions, full of possible choices, it will keep you at the edge of your seat. The finale was very interesting.
I found the show very underrated, and that’s a pity, as well as the fact that it was canceled. I would genuinely love to watch a third season.
