Jack Kline enters the Supernatural show in the 13th season, but his story was designed in the 12th. Jack is a Nephilim, the son of Lucifer, with a human woman, Kelly Kline.
I will not get to all the details that led to his birth, despite the fact that they created an interesting storyline and yet another challenge for the Winchester brothers and the sweet angel Castiel. I'd instead focus on the character itself, as it was played by Alexander Calvert.
A breath of fresh air
After so many years on air, the show needed something new that would grab the audience's attention again - Sam's six-pack wasn't doing the trick anymore.
So, the best way to develop interest was to create a new character that would be thickening the plot. A new permanent character that would take the spotlight along with Sam and Dean.
Supernatural fans are used to regular characters that don't appear in every episode. For a while, Jack shared a significant amount of screen time with the brothers, which helped create an interest and connection with the character.
New rules… and connections
Despite the fear that Jack would turn out evil, he is a great new asset in the Winchester's fight to save the world. He changes the game for everyone, and he makes us see a different side of Sam and Dean and, especially, of Castiel.
Jack is, after all, quite sweet and innocent. He wants to fit in, as any other person, and the trio guides him and loves him as true parents.
Alex Calvert showed to be a great actor, and he can make us feel great empathy for him.
Was him a good or bad addition?
I realized lately that there were different feelings towards Jack among the Supernatural fan zone. I really can't get it. I loved the character, and he definitely shook up the show, which was really needed after so many seasons.
I love his innocence, which provides many lovely and funny scenes. He is the most powerful being on Earth and still a kid in need of guidance and love, and that gives us good entertainment time.
