Little Women is a classic of literature that everyone should know, and this movie gave us a lovely version of it.
Jo, the protagonist, is an aspirant writer struggling to earn her place. The story is passed in two different timelines - the present moment and Jo's memories of her sisters.
Family
The center of this story is the concept of family and relationship. The protagonist is, in my opinion, the strong bond these four sisters created among themselves.
We follow their domestic struggles, dreams, frustrations. And the whole connection is beautiful and truthful.
Following Jo’s perspective, we realize what changed throughout the years. How did each one of them grow up? What were their dreams? Do they still have the same dreams? Do they look at life the same way they did in those teenage years?
Feminism
The movie is about family and relationships as it is about feminism. These four little women fight hard to achieve their goals in a world of men - made by men, for men.
They need to face a series of limitations for the simple fact that they are women. This is marvelously translated by Jo’s editor when he says, “The fate of a female character should be either married or dead.” There was no other option. There was no way out.
Jo is the character that more obviously fights against the system. Yet, she is not the only one suffering from the prejudices of her time. No one takes Amy’s painting seriously, and that hurts her. Yet, Amy has a different personality. She is more practical, you could say. From my perspective, Amy has a different approach. Instead of openly fighting, she goes around.
Lovely movie for family time
Little Women is a lovely movie filled with sweet but strong characters. It focuses on the values of love and friendship—a film for the whole family.
Definitely, a “must watch”.
