After a slight disappointment with season one, this new season felt refreshing. It changed my perspective about the show.
The Witcher is a story of war, and this season begins with the aftermath of the battle of Sodden. But now, Geralt has an important and delicate mission: Ciri.
What makes someone a monster?
This season also has a lot of introspection and self-analysis. The question, "What makes someone a monster?" arises from the very beginning. It is a subtle introduction to what was to come and the critical question of this season: Who is Ciri? Or even better: What is Ciri?
In this season, there is a lot of questioning about most characters. Who are they? What are they? And some of them may surprise the viewer.
For example, one of the main characters, Yennefer, has changed this season. She is vulnerable now and having second thoughts about herself. After all, who is she without magic? She is on a path of transformation and rediscovery.
Generally speaking, in this season, the characters were better explored. We have more access to their motivations and feelings, which humanizes them.
Narrative
One of the things I liked the most in this season is that the narrative is more linear and easy to follow. Unfortunately, the first season became a bit tiring with all the time jumping.
I liked that linearity very much. Yet, I felt that despite the significant amount of action in the show, the story's development was a bit slow.
Other than that, I believe The Witcher has all the ingredients to be a success - political intrigue, war, tension, and magic, friendship, and love. All well cooked in an intricate story.
I believe that one improvement that could be done for the third season is at the political intrigue level - it has to be more "into the story". Most of the time, it seems like a secondary story that has little influence on the main action, which is not true.
Oh, and do not forget about Jaskier! He is back and brings a lot of comedy and sweetness with him.
Juicy secrets
As mentioned above, the narrative was slower this season. All the juicy secrets were left to the end. So, we ended up with so many questions!
The season finale was, without a doubt, the most exciting episode, and now, how can we wait for a year or so? We want more.
The Family
The way things ended tells us that a new and powerful family was born - Ciri, Geralt, and Yennefer. What will happen next? We are not sure and many questions will need a third season to be answered.
Overall, The Witcher had a tremendous improvement from the first season to this one.
