Queen Charlotte is a story from the Bridgerton series, where the main character is the queen.
It is not exactly a surprise because of all polemics surrounding the fact that a black woman represented the queen. The authors used that in their favor, and in a good way if you ask me - they created another successful series.
Queen Charlotte is not brilliant, but it is a sweet story.
Irreverence and Strong Female Characters
Bridgerton already got us used to strong female characters that are not exactly aligned with the historical era they represent. Queen Charlotte wasn’t different.
The impetuosity and bravery of the young queen are evident in the first scene. She is a fantastic character, and despite seeming so “badly behaved” for the time, she showed to have the biggest heart.
It also focuses on the needs and intimacy of older women, which is rarely approached, especially in such a sensitive way as this.
Love Lesson
Love is capable of everything, and you should do everything for love - this is the general idea of Disney princess movies. Funny enough, it is the message here as well.
Charlotte arrives in a foreign country with different culture and no friends. She marries a man she doesn’t know, and she soon finds out he has mental issues. Does she run away? Well, she tried; she got scared, after all. Yet, she ends up giving him what is missing: love.
Can love cure a mental illness?
The quick answer is no, and Queen Charlotte did not intend to lie to us. The King does not get cured; he will never be. In fact, he will be worst with time, but he could enjoy a good life.
Queen Charlotte gives a good lesson about love, tolerance, and acceptance. It is a sweet story to binge-watch.
