Gone Baby Gone: When Doing the Right Thing Feels Wrong

(Contains Spoilers) Gone Baby Gone is intense and deeply morally disturbing. A child’s disappearance is one of those stories that hurts instantly, on a visceral level. From the first moments, the film makes it clear that this isn’t just a mystery — it’s a moral test, and no one will come out untouched. It’s impossible not to blame the mother (Amy Ryan, from Only Murders in the Building ) at first. What do you mean you left her sleeping alone? That single detail fills you with anger and disbelief, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. An Investigation You Can’t Look Away From The investigation itself is gripping. It pulls you in completely, and you’re rooting for the girl to be alive the entire time. Every new lead feels urgent. When the child is supposedly thrown into the lake, the moment is devastating. After everything, it feels deeply unfair. You’re left thinking: No. Not like this. Not after so much. And yet the movie keeps going. The girl is gone, but the ...

The Sinner (Season 3) - The abyss of a tortured mind

Since season 1 , The Sinner brings a different look at the usual thriller/crime stories.  The most obvious is the perspective:  The Sinner  doesn't look for who committed the crime or how.  What's important, and what moves Detective Ambrose (Bill Pullman), is the why . The show tries to reveal what lies in a tortured mind. What drives it? How can a regular person, suddenly, become a murderer? This season is no different. The protagonist is Jamie (Matt Bomer), a family man, soon to be a father, who apparently lets his best friend bleed to death. The first two episodes are a bit slow, which you may find a bit boring. Yet, things change significantly after the third one. As soon as the mystery thickens, you won't stop. You'll want to know more.   Jamie and Nick At first, Jamie and Nick's relationship is hard to understand. It is clear that Nick (Chris Messina) had an extreme influence on Jamie, but why? And what kind of influence exactly? As the show deve...

Mindhunter - Tell, don’t show

Mindhunter  is an interesting show about the origins of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit.  I was curious, the minute I heard about it. It’s the beginning of a study that I was quite interested in during my college days. The story takes place in the seventies, extremely well recreated down to the smallest detail. It also gives us good, deep characters in a combination that makes it impossible for you to watch only one episode. As The Sinner , it is not about the crime itself, but rather about the "why" and understanding the mind of the criminal.  Fighting For Recognition Focused on the  early days of the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit,  Mindhunter  shows how  a couple of passionate professionals worked hard to be taken seriously by the rest of the bureau and other law enforcement agencies. It is fascinating the way they enter the psyche of serial killers, trying to find out how their minds work. While conducting their intriguing stud...

The Sinner - S1&2 Review

The Sinner is a “crime drama mystery” show that you can watch on Netflix .  It has a good plot, deep characters, and the right amount of mystery that clues you in every now and then, without ever revealing too much.  Unpredictable outcomes and good cliffhangers at the end of each episode will keep you hooked on this show for hours. One Season, One Story You have different stories for each season, and both of them are a little disturbing in their own way.  In the first season, we meet a woman (Jessica Biel) with a hard past, filled with psychological abuses, surrounded by hypocrisy and, from my point of view, some madness.  Dark trauma, repressed memories, that may recall you from  Sharp Objects . Despite that, she kept herself strong until a single event blew everything out. The detective of the case, Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman), the actual connection between both seasons of the show, is a very interesting and peculiar character himself....
