The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann - Review

Maddie’s disappearance was probably the biggest case of this sort in Portugal, ever. A highly controversial issue with a significant impact on public opinion in one of the safest countries in the world.  Many things were said about it, and many doubts and suspicions remain in our minds, to this very day, about what really happened to little Maddie. It Leads You Where It Wants The way this documentary was made is very clever. Follow along step by step throughout the investigation, and you will change your opinion and suspicions as each piece of evidence comes to light.  You might be overwhelmed with many different feelings, and no matter your initial opinion about the case, you’ll feel doubt start to creep up as you watch each episode. Cultural Differences It’s very interesting the way different people, from different countries, face each detail and the cultural differences that might seem like nothing on most regular occasions, might be huge under such com...

Superpowers, Family Drama & Dark Humor — Umbrella Academy

This story looks like one of those bedtime stories our parents used to tell us. Superhero children, with awesome powers, yet so normal, requiring love and affection, like any regular child.  Moral lessons and consequences that befall them when they do something wrong… Well, this isn’t exactly the premise of the show, but at first sight, it’s what it most reminded me of. Be Special, Not Happy You have this group of individuals, linked, connected as brothers, not by blood but by the craziness of their adoptive father instead.  He took the children under his care and turned his house into some sort of boarding school for special kids. Give it a couple of years, and you end up with a very dysfunctional family.  Good Characters Despite the extensive use of fantasy, we can easily feel empathy for the characters. They’re all very interesting and very different from one another, which makes us pay attention to all of their stories, and they’re all pretty ...

Dirty John: Why the Show Didn’t Hit the Mark

Domestic violence in all its forms is kind of the subject ‘of the hour’ in my country due to a series of unbelievable court decisions regarding it and cases involving it. Maybe because of that, I had some sort of expectations about this show that weren’t totally fulfilled by what it’s really about. It Didn't Convince Me From what I saw, the show wasn’t very entertaining because it was too slow. Debra ( Connie Britton - You can also watch her at 911 and Zero Day ) was a tedious, monotonous character, and John - Eric Bana ( Untamed ) - wasn’t very convincing as a villain.  As I hadn’t heard of this particular case before, it was only by the end of the first episode that I knew it was based on real facts and people, but that just made the whole thing seem… even more shallow. On Purpose? After a couple of episodes, however, I realized that some of that vibe, of that feeling it was evoking, how fake it all seemed, might all be on purpose. T His apparent ‘not-so-grea...

Russian Doll - A Pleasant Surprise

When I first watched the trailer for this show, all I could think of was that it seemed like that one Supernatural episode where the Winchester brothers were always coming back to the same day and dying repeatedly, which I personally thought was annoying as hell.  So, I cast it aside, dismissed it and decided I probably wouldn’t enjoy watching it.  However, later, out of the blue, I decided to give it a try, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good the show actually is. Instead of being annoying or repetitive, the story evolves and heightens your curiosity every time she comes back to life and decides to change her route. Surprisingly Good, Still Missing Something As usual in these kinds of shows, the end didn’t provide us with many answers, leaving some doubt lingering in the air, enabling a possible second season. Even so, this show is worth your time. The characters are unusually deep for the genre, the dialogue is fluid and natural, and, despite the weirdn...

Bird Box - Movie Review

A post-apocalyptic scenario without zombies. Is that possible? Yes! And with quite an interesting result, to be honest.  Bird Box , starring Sandra Bullock, offers a fresh take on the well-explored scenario of an apocalyptic event. Not Exactly Jumpy It wasn’t as scary as I read it would be; your heart will not race a lot, but it’s a pretty decent movie and a good time, definitely.  It might seem a little slow in the beginning, but as the story unfolds, it will most certainly catch and hold your attention until the very end. Curious Choices The protagonist is a very curious choice, as well as the way the story develops. Her internal growth is obvious, but also her very own individual goals.  Rather than trying to find an explanation for whatever is happening or how it might all come to be, all she wants is to reach shelter, both for herself and the children. However, she won’t look like the perfect mother who will do everything for her babies. That makes...

Bohemian Rhapsody - Movie Review

I’ve been wanting to watch this movie for a while, and now that I have finally been able to do it, I must say I was delighted throughout.  I liked it a lot, considered it time very well-spent, and for days I couldn’t get the music out of my head (even more so than I usually have to try, given how good it is). It Wasn't Exactly Like That Like many others, I was bothered by the lack of precision in some of the timing and dates, including things everyone knows, but even so, they dared to change them!  Alas, I can understand that they made some changes out of convenience for the unfolding of the movie’s story. Is This The End? Back to it: I was enjoying the movie a lot when it suddenly ended abruptly. “Is there something wrong with my Internet?” - I found myself pondering. “Where is the rest of the story?” - I wondered, whilst I was left really feeling like a huge chunk of it was missing.  Later, when my disappointment had simmered down, I think I understo...

You - The Creepiest Guy (Season 1 Review)

This is a story that might make you feel weird, since right from the very beginning, even if you don’t have any idea what this show is about.  Joe (Penn Badgley), the protagonist, is this creepy guy who can send shivers down your spine. Severely mentally disturbed, he might actually make you feel sick. The Scary "Normality" The guy is absolutely disturbing, and his “incredibly normal” appearance can make the most impressionable minds question some of the people they know.  From the very first episode, it’s impressive to see how far he can go and how easily unimaginable things take place.  Impressive Character The character is deep, his story involving, and he really acts like he’s some kind of victim of circumstances, making you wonder how such a thing is possible or whether the girl (Elizabeth Lail) is just blind to it all.  You’ll soon realize she’s just oblivious to the escalating situation and figure out that he is just so perfect in his psych...
