Sometimes all you want is to laugh, but not with a senseless show that makes you feel disconnected. Sounds strange? Well, Resident Alien does exactly that.
I had an excellent time watching this series. It's consistently funny, surprisingly heartfelt, and full of memorable characters. While it starts as a fish-out-of-water sci-fi comedy, it gradually becomes something much more interesting: a clever look at what it means to be human.
If you've been overlooking Resident Alien, it's absolutely worth your time.
An Alien Learning Human Emotions
Someone once told me that emotions are contagious and that we should be careful about surrounding ourselves with people who constantly complain or live in misery. Watching Harry (Alan Tudyk), the alien protagonist, reminded me of that conversation.
At first, he observes humans like a scientist studying a strange species. But the longer he stays on Earth, the more he becomes infected by human emotions. He starts experiencing empathy, friendship, love, guilt, and grief—even when he doesn't fully understand them.
It's a funny concept, but it's also surprisingly relatable.
A Hilarious Analysis of Human Nature
One of the show's greatest strengths is how Harry analyzes human behavior.
Because he's an outsider, he questions everything we take for granted. Social rules, relationships, small talk, traditions, and emotional reactions all seem bizarre to him.
His observations are brutally honest and incredibly funny. He often dismisses the drama surrounding him because, from his perspective, many of our problems are unnecessary or self-inflicted.
Watching someone strip away all the social conventions and simply ask, "Why do humans behave like this?" is both hilarious and refreshing.
A Fantastic Supporting Cast
The show wouldn't work nearly as well without its supporting characters.
Every resident of the small town brings their own personality, flaws, and ongoing drama. Their relationships create plenty of emotional moments, but they also give Harry endless opportunities to misunderstand humanity in the funniest ways possible.
The contrast between everyone's complicated emotional lives and Harry's blunt, logical perspective creates some of the show's best comedy.
Alan Tudyk Is Perfect
Alan Tudyk delivers one of the funniest performances I've seen in a comedy series.
His physical comedy, awkward mannerisms, facial expressions, and unique delivery make Harry completely believable as an alien trying—and often failing—to imitate a human being.
It's the kind of performance that could easily become a gimmick in someone else's hands, but Tudyk gives the character surprising depth without ever losing the humor.
He is absolutely perfect for this role.
Is It Worth Watching?
Resident Alien is much more than a sci-fi comedy. It's a charming, funny, and surprisingly thoughtful series that uses an alien's perspective to hold up a mirror to humanity.
It reminds us that many of the things we stress over look absurd from the outside, while also showing how powerful—and contagious—our emotions can be.
It's a cute, clever, and genuinely funny analysis of ourselves as a species, and I think it deserves far more attention than it gets.
